Why a progression and not a regression?
- Brain has matured into two different types of sleep: NREM and REM. Before this mark, baby would fall asleep, go into deep sleep, and stay there until ready to wake up.
- Your baby is now cycling through 4 stages of sleep to create a sleep cycles that on average is about 30-45 minutes.
- Your baby’s biological clock is fully formed! Circadian Rhythms are the natural sleep waves that run about 24 hours. The sun helps reset them.
Help your baby through this progression…
- Make sure their sleep environment is optimal: dark, cool, with sound machine.
- Early bedtimes! This will help prevent your baby from being overtired and payback any sleep debt that has been aquired.
- Teach your baby to fall asleep independently! This will give them the skill to be able to connect sleep cycles without sleep associations like being rocked.
